Desert and sea

After feeling that we were parked in the middle of the Eyre Highway all night, roadtrains coming and going all night, sunrise was late at 7.45.
Entered the Nullarbor .....much more vegetation than we expected...hardy little silvery green shrubs 30 cm high with occasional straggly trees 2 m high.
Nullabore Roadhouse.... exorbitant petrol prices, stroppy truck drivers and no shade, but clean bathrooms....showers for $1
Stunning lookout over Bunda Cliffs and the Great Australian Bight.


After several hours approached the WA border.
A police woman checked our G2G pass, ensured we had not been in Byron Bay and let us in.
Quarantine confiscated the potatoes, onions and pumpkin SA had allowed, leaving us with shriveled mushrooms and a sweet potato!!
Eucula just down the road....horray we're in WA....not a town....just a Roadhouse.
Just gained 2 1/2 hours...or was it 1hr 45 mins?
On we drove...on, on, on
Stopped at Cocklebiddy , population 10,500......flies that is.....up our nose, in our mouth and biting March flies. They had powered sites....treated ourselves to the air con ..38 degrees.
2 majestic eagles in a cage....did not get to the sinkhole....next time!

Another 500km across mostly treeless plains today. We are using our drums of diesel careful to avoid the highest prices across the Nullarbor...up to $2.22 a litre. We know when a Roadhouse is approaching as we can see the communications tower from 5 km away....nice to have some reception for a short time. Each Roadhouse has a golf hole....no real fairway but fancy artificial grass for the greens. Stopped at Yalata an Aboriginal Community....they are part of the tribe moved from the Maralinga Region to allow the bomb testing to go ahead...they are now spread over a wide area. The community itself is closed due to Covid risk. The caravan park has only been open for 5 months with brand new facilities and a very cherpy chatty manager.

Jerramungup

We have stopped half way to Albany. It has been a very very windy day...hot wind to begin with. We stopped at Ravensthorpe for lunch and it sounded like the roof was going to blow off! Silo art of local banksias....many of which were growing in the main Street. As we drove further it began to pour with rain and it got very cold.....decided to call it a day at Jerramungup.......everything is something up here.

Cowell

Drove 100km down the coast....crops growing...the first we have seen since the wheat fields of WA. Cowell is a small town with several nice old buildings...100 yrs +....this used to be a busy port....now a sleepy small town  Walked out along the jetty and through the mangroves. No social distancing here! It is very cold....we have got out all of our jumpers, jackets, gloves and hats!
